Construction begins on $30M senior center
NAPLES — Construction is underway for a new permanent home for the Naples Senior Center.
The new home for the nonprofit, which provides comprehensive programs and social services for local seniors, is on a 13.7-acre site on Autumn Oaks Lane, a block south of Immokalee Road in North Naples. The 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building is anticipated to be completed and open by the end of 2022, according to a statement.
During a recent groundbreaking ceremony, Naples Senior Center officials announced the public phase of its capital campaign with a $30 million goal, the release states. To date, a little over $23 million has been raised.
Naples Senior Center provides “one-stop shop” services addressing the emotional and social needs of seniors in Collier and southern Lee counties. Since opening its doors in 2014, the organization has seen its membership surge from 80 members initially to more than 1,400 members today.
“In just seven years, we have seen a surge in the depth and scope of need for comprehensive senior services in this region and we have quickly outgrown our current leased facilities,” Naples Senior Center President and CEO Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, says in the release. “This new building will give us the additional resources needed to provide our growing elderly population with the tools to address life’s challenges, like isolation and loneliness.”
The new Naples Senior Center will be centrally located to the largest concentration of members and will be easily accessible from other locations in Collier County. The site also will enable seniors to benefit from a nurturing, natural setting that offers outdoor space for walking, quiet contemplation and low-impact exercise programs such as tai chi.
Naples Senior Center launched its capital campaign in 2019 to generate the funds needed to secure the land, construct the building and meet appropriate furniture/fixtures and equipment requirements.
The capital campaign was accelerated by a $5-million commitment from local philanthropists Patty and Jay Baker, the release states. This lead gift helped put the project on a successful track and inspired others in the community to support the cause.
Shopping center to get new life, vacant grocery store could be split up
NAPLES — The Green Tree Shopping Center in Naples, at the intersection of Airport Road and Immokalee Road, is getting a major renovation.
A fresh coastal-contemporary design and open-air concept will replaced the former Mediterranean design, according to a statement from the landlord, Naples-based Crifasi Real Estate. That will help transform the property into more of a lifestyle center versus a traditional retail shopping center, the release adds. A total value for the project wasn’t disclosed. The project is expected to be completed later this year.
”The future of successful neighborhood shopping centers will be a variety of tenants with many different uses,” Jack Crifasi of Crifasi Real Estate says in the release. “Green Tree Center is a destination that is more conducive to the surrounding, upscale neighborhoods. We have been selective on the tenants, as we are looking for the right mix that not only benefits the ownership but also the current and future tenants as well.”
The tenant mix includes several restaurant spaces being, ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 square feet under air, coupled with an expanded outdoor dining area. Crifasi says there’s significant interest in the modernized 51,000-square-foot former Sweetbay grocery store space with various potential tenants; the space may also be divided. That space has been vacant for eight years.
Some of the property cosmetic updates include open aired gables, large outdoor cupolas, custom lighting, expanded tile walkways, fountains with torches and updated landscaping with flora throughout the property. The NCH Wellness Center located within the center is also going through a massive multimillion-dollar renovation to be completed in June 2021. A 7-Eleven is being built on the parcel just off Green Tree Center on Airport Road, with an expected completion date in May. “The shopping center is beautiful and transformative, and it will become a destination point,” Crifasi says in the release.
It started with a recent tip from colleague Brittany Carloni about a luxury car dealer potentially kicking the tires in Collier County.
Then alert reader Linda Miller followed up Wednesday about the EnviroStruct LLC construction site that just began evolving near the Walmart on U.S. 41 in North Naples, saying she heard a Ferrari dealership may be parking there.
Indeed, the automaker is the latest project for the Bonita Springs-based contractor, which has been rolling out all types of car shops in Southwest Florida, Central Florida and the Jacksonville area.
"We're rocking," said giddy company president Neil Simon. "We're clearing the land now and importing the fill.
A "shiny" two-story dealership with 52,000 square feet of space should rise from the 4 acres or so near the Immokalee Road intersection around the third quarter of 2020, perhaps September or the fall, Simon said.
"This one has clean lines, what you would think of when you think Ferrari," he said. "The tile will come from Italy. It will be sharp."
